Movie Review: A Bigger Splash

Set in the beautiful island of Pantelleria, a sun-baked volcanic isle off the Sicilian coast. A Bigger Splash is a psychological thriller starring Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoenaerts and Dakota Johnson. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, also the director of I am Love. Luca’s works gives off a vibrancy present in both movies. Aside from the acting, he makes you aware of the atmosphere in the movie, the wind, the sand, the water, you can feel the intensity of each element.

Tilda played well as a rockstar without having to say much in the entire film, it was pure acting on her part. Ralph Fiennes plays the role of Harry. Marianne’s (Tilda) ex who suddenly appears with her daughter (Dakota) in the airport interrupting her vacation with her boyfriend Paul (Matthias Shoenaerts).

Ralph Fiennes has this charismatic and spontaneous character, that I thought Harry and Marianne’s chemistry was undeniably good. Matthias’ character Paul, is very private, an observer, serious and caring. A total opposite of Harry. Dakota’s character has a certain mystery and temperament that makes her appear standoffish and out of place. Her relationship with her dad was questionable and a little bit off. At the end of the film, you’ll see a softer side of her that’s never seen which will make you realize that she’s just like any typical teenager.

The movie will make you feel intense without having to fall off your seat. It’s refreshing, vibrant, beautiful Italian countryside that’s never been seen and great acting. I’ll give it a 7/10.
